I arrived in a sea of yellow fluff. It looked wholesome, but vibes can lie. The boys in the lot were pulled out and we never saw them again. Things got too real, too soon.

A worker pressed my head down, the blade flashed, and my beak burned short. They said it kept us from fighting. It kept me from being whole. Eating was torture for weeks.

We were packed wing to wing, beak to shoulder. We stood on wire, stacked in heat, breathing each other’s breath. Wings forgot how to open.

Then one day, a latch clicked. I stretched my wings and flapped – it was not elegant. Less Swan Lake, more drunk uncle at wedding. Still, my wings were winging, and it was glorious.

I turned back once. Rows of wire cages, dust in the light, and hundreds of eyes looking back at me. I was free. They were not. That moment still haunts my sleep.
